Terrorism landmarks/targets
AIR, with input from its expert terrorism/counterterrorism team, has identified the potential types of targets for possible terrorist attack.
The AIR landmark database contains approximately 300,000 potential targets. Of these, AIR has identified a subset of “trophy targets” that carry a higher threat of a major attack. These include, but are not limited to, high-profile skyscrapers, corporate headquarters, airports, government facilities, tunnels, and bridges.
The primary target types reflect critical infrastructure and key assets:
airports |
malls |
amusement parks |
medical centers |
bus terminals |
natural gas facilities |
casinos |
nuclear power plants |
chemical plants |
oil refineries and tank farms |
churches |
ports |
clinics |
post offices |

railway bridges |
electric power facilities |
religious landmarks |

The AIR landmark database includes a comprehensive set of potential targets.
National exposures
AIR catastrophe models use this database to help government and industry estimate monetary and injury consequences to private property, workers, and residents due to natural catastrophes and terrorist attacks. The database includes the location, replacement value, construction characteristics, workers, and residents of all buildings in the United States — commercial and
residential
— enabling the model to compute total risk for the nation.
